Description

Pace Public Transit: Modernizing the Rider Experience with WCAG Accessibility and Real-Time Data
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pace, a major public transit provider, operated with a 15-year-old website that created barriers for thousands of daily riders. The platform lacked WCAG accessibility and had disorganized content, making it difficult for users to access schedules and real-time tracking. This poor user experience required a complete digital overhaul to meet modern commuter needs.

Clarity completed a full website redesign and replatforming, focusing on a modern look, improved navigation, and organized content. The new Acquia-hosted platform delivers an accessible, intuitive user experience. Extensive user and accessibility testing ensured a design that provides easy-to-follow schedules, integrated real-time bus tracking, and seamless trip planning. This project modernized the Pace brand, delivering a flexible, reliable platform that enhances customer satisfaction and supports future improvements.

1 | Website Redesign and Modernization
--------------------------------------

Clarity was chosen by Pace to plan, execute, and deliver a redesign of the website to attain easier navigation, better organization, increased viewers, and higher customer satisfaction. Together, the two parties set out to create a useful tool—accessible content, easy-to-follow schedules for over 200 routes, real-time bus tracking, and trip planning—within the context of an aesthetic that brings the brand into the modern web space.

### **Key Outcomes & Expertise:**

- Replaced a 15-year-old platform with a modern, user-centric website on the Acquia platform.
- Integrated real-time bus tracking and robust trip planning tools for commuters.
- Enhanced the public-facing platform, significantly improving rider experience and access to essential services.

2 | Accessibility and Inclusive Design
--------------------------------------

Pace needed to ensure that its website was fully accessible and inclusive for all residents, particularly since much of its core ridership relies on Pace's paratransit services. Performing user and accessibility testing of the new website prototype led to insights that allowed Clarity to perform further optimizations ([this is detailed in a MidCamp presentation here](https://www.midcamp.org/2020/topic-proposal/embracing-usability-and-accessibility-pace-case-study)). Performing these tests during the proper part of the project process ensured a thoughtful design prepared to meet the needs of its diverse audience for years to come in addition to having the flexibility to support future enhancements.

### **Key Accessibility Outcomes:**

- Achieved high WCAG accessibility compliance via extensive user testing.
- Implemented technical controls for consistent color contrast and semantic structure.
- Delivered a public-facing platform that is fully inclusive and equitable for all users.

3 | Responsive Website for Commuters
------------------------------------

Pace needed to ensure that the information on its website could be easily found, scanned, and absorbed by transit riders who's primary device might be the phone.

Clarity solved this by developing and maintaining the website to be responsive across different screen sizes. The website layout shifts to optimally display the most important information even at the smallest screen sizes.

### **Key Responsive Outcomes:**

- Launched a responsively designed website.
- Provided an easy, fast solution for commuters on the go.
